The Good and the Bad of it.....

A friend once told me that she likes being alone, so much so that she is possessive about her solitude.
Solitude often refers to loneliness, but in this day and age it has split into varied meanings, it can act as a break in which we can recollect our selves and recall the days happenings.
When we meditate in solitude , the mind settles down and stops running the daily marathon that it has got used to. It helps a person to stay focused.
Solitude can act as a balm but can also serve as an enemy...since when we try to cut ourselves from others for longer periods, we fail to realise that relationships too are vital for a happy life.
Striking a balance is a must. It's good to spend time with oneself, all alone, just we and our thoughts, but it's also important to open up and breathe in the freshness of the blessings showered on us ..our loved ones, our happy moments, our sadness...yes sadness as well, since it helps us grow, making us appreciate the good things in life.
Solitude is a bliss, till it doesn't turn into a well in which we decide to stagnate forever...it should act as a short sojourn, getting that refreshed effect that helps us understand and appreciate life.

Sana, I don't know, people often speaks about loneliness and solitude.

Does solitude have a pain in it, a sweet pain?

yup gp, youve got the point :)

Yes Kiran, theres a sweet pain connected with solitude, its just that you shouldnt let it become harsh or it creates havoc in ones life...the words open ended, its got varied meanings..it means different things to different people :)

I agree completely. While solitide is good to get in touch with our inner selves,it is essential to have people around you else solitude can turn into the much dreaded loneliness.

Very true. Solitude is sweet when brief.

i'm a bit of a loner too. but i know that too much of being alone isn't a good thing. you've got to balance the things. lil here lil there.

i think by emphasizing on balance you've said it right. :)

Hello Sana:)

Very interesting post on solitude.

To catch a brief moment of interlude from our busy, daily life is a necessity to recoup our energy, focus our thoughts and propel our actions in the right direction.

I will not call it loneliness when a person takes off a few minutes or a few hours to meditate or to be with oneself. The time which we spend alone every day to commune with God, pray to HIM, to understand our good points and bad points or simply to sit idle and think of nothing will act as a tonic for our mind, invigorate our being and enable us to cope competently with our daily busy schedule. Of course, sitting alone thinking of nothing, keeping the mind empty even for a small period of time is extremely difficult. Try it and see:)

There is a famous place in Kanyakumari in Tamilnadu called Vivekananda Rock. It is located in the sea at a litte distance from the mainland. You can reach it either by swimming or by boat. Swimming means you have to be a really good swimmer because the waves are very rough. Swami vivekananda use to swim to the rock, sit and meditate there for a few days.

Jesus as you know took time off to meditate often in hills and lonely places. Mount Olives where He went to meditate is quite famous.

John 8:1
"Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto Him; and He sat down, and taught them".

Of course you are right in saying that we should not go for long periods of solitude or isolation. We cannot cut ourselves completely from our family and friends. We need them to keep our mental balance, to share our joys and sorrows, our achievements and failures, to celebrate with us and share our sufferings and sorrows,

Vey interesting post Sana and very useful for all of us.

Have a wonderful Easter. May the Risen Lord bless you and your family abundantly:)
Joseph

I think solitude is good for ones self, like you said it gives us a chance to think. We do need our loved ones and friends to keep us happy. This is another great post and thank you for coming by.
